Zone

ZONE Land use–or planning–regulations normally divide cities into different districts, called zones, in which specific uses are permitted, conditionally permitted, or prohibited. In Oakland, as in many cities, the three main categories of zones are Residential, Commercial and Manufacturing. Live/work, presently permitted only in existing buildings originally designed and constructed for industrial or commercial use, is allowed as-of-right in all zones where residential use is permitted, which in Oakland means all Residential and Commercial zones. In Manufacturing zones, live/work renovations require a minor conditional use permit, an administrative process (without a public hearing) which normally takes about six weeks. New construction Home Occupation is allowed in all Residential and Commercial zones. It is not permitted in Manufacturing zones.
